Auf in die Straßen! / Up and into the streets

Ein Streifzug durch Paris

A foray through Paris

I literally ran into an exhibition format in Paris in May that was a little strange at first. Photo exhibitions in public space. It’s not like the public space in today’s big cities is free of photographs. The advertising uses the image medium in partly gigantic formats and to an extent that can be described without exaggeration as flooding. But photo art, photo series, and exhibitions are not necessarily expected when one moves around the streets of the metropolis.

After I first noticed a series of small-format photos that were glued to a wall in a row and without any explanation or arrangement on a street corner, I turned my attention to them and, lo and behold, discovered further forms of street exhibitions. Individually or in small groups, photos stick to the walls between street art created with other media

But Street Art also uses photographic images, modifies and combines them with other media or integrates photos into its games. One of the most famous is probably the portrait of John Hamon, of whom no one knows who he is, if he even exists and what’s the point in it?

But there are also real exhibitions e.g. in courtyard driveways. Unfortunately I don’t know exactly where the view into the courtyard entrance was, but it was worth it. Photography overwrites and competes with Street Art. Pictures are glued to the wall with wallpaper paste but if necessary also with gaffer tape. Sabine Kleinas and Stan Rey-grange are the names of the artist couple that dared to take to the street here. The research in the net results in only one hit. It was important to the Bild-Zeitung that these were orgasm pictures under water.

But there are also pictures on a more serious, more sophisticated level. Under the arcades of the Philharmonie, pictures by Jakob Khrist stick to an otherwise unadorned concrete pillar. `Electronic feeling´ is the name of the 2014 series and was probably associated with the exhibition `ELECTRO – From Kraftwerk to Daft Punk´, which took place in the Philharmonie at that time.

Near the Opera Bastille, in the middle of building sites, I discover an exhibition in the windows of an obviously abandoned department store. Even without really knowing who the pictures are from or what they are ultimately supposed to be it was an impressive exhibition that will probably share the fate of street art – at the latest when the building is demolished.

I was about to leave Paris, when another form of public photography was in my way. At the Gare de l ´Est, large-format pictures by Jordi Ruiz Cirera hang on the fence. He photographed Mennonites in Bolivia. Portraits and pictures from the life of this Christian community. The pictures are presented by the French railway SNCF.

But that’s not all. On the other side of the fence it continued with clear, tidy portraits of everyday things. Camille Gharbi calls the series Preuves d´Amour (proofs of love) It is an exhibition within the framework of the Festival Circulations, a festival of young European photography that has been taking place since 2011.

The development of new materials and the fact that nowadays you can print on almost anything that is reasonably flat leads to the fact that such formats can be realized more and more. The interesting thing is that photo art leaves its sacred halls and takes to the streets just as street art slowly creeps into galleries and museums from the streets in a counter-movement.

Also wieder los und neu kleben.
