Ich habe wieder eine Multimedia-Show erstellt, das passiert hin und wieder. Es ist eine Möglichkeit – zugegebenermaßen eine etwas mühsame – mit den Fotos, die man so angesammelt hat, etwas Sinnvolles anzufangen. Das Thema der aktuellen Multimedia-Show ist das Saarland. Ich bin dort geboren und fühle eine starke Anziehung zu dem kleinen Land.
Exkursionen zur historischen und zur aktiven Schwerindustrie des Saarlands brachten im Laufe von neun Jahren eine Auswahl von rund 700 Fotos zusammen. Dazu kommen etliche Minuten Videos von der Dillinger Hütte.
Was aber anfangen mit diesem Material? Ich fand lange keine befriedigende Antwort. Dokumentationen über das Saarland gibt es viele. Warum noch eine weitere hinzufügen? In einem Gespräch mit Rolf kam die Erkenntnis: Es macht für mich nur Sinn etwas über das Saarland zu sagen, wenn es mit mir persönlich zu tun hat.
I have created another multimedia show, which I do from time to time. It is a way – albeit a somewhat laborious one – to do something meaningful with the photos you have accumulated. The theme of the current multimedia show is the Saarland. I was born there and feel a strong attraction to this small region.
Over the course of nine years, excursions to the Saarland’s historical and active heavy industry sites resulted in a selection of around 700 photos. In addition, there are several minutes of video footage from the Dillinger Hütte steelworks.
But what to do with all this material? For a long time, I couldn’t find a satisfactory answer. There are many documentaries about the Saarland. Why add another one? In a conversation with Rolf, I realised that it only makes sense for me to say something about the Saarland if it has something to do with me personally.
Damit begann die eigentliche Arbeit – Recherche und Auswahl. Ich durchforstete alte Familienalben, stöberte im Archiv der saarländischen Staatskanzlei, kontaktierte Heimatvereine und städtische Archive, fragte bei YouTubern um Leihgaben an.
Die eigentliche Produktion – also die Zusammenstellung von Fotos, Videos, Grafiken,Text, O-Tönen und Musik – ging dann relativ zügig.
Das Resultat ist eine Multimedia-Show von knapp 17 Minuten. Eine Dokumentation, bei der Familiengeschichte und politisch-wirtschaftliche Entwicklung verknüpft sind. Es ist die erste Produktion, bei der ich überwiegend Fremdmaterial verwendet habe.
Und doch ist sie das persönlichste visuelle Werk, das ich bisher erstellt habe.
That’s when the real work began – research and selection. I combed through old family albums, rummaged through the archives of the Saarland State Chancellery, contacted local history associations and municipal archives, and asked YouTubers for loans.
The actual production – i.e. compiling photos, videos, graphics, text, original sound bites and music – then went relatively quickly.
The result is a multimedia show lasting just under 17 minutes. A documentary that links family history with political and economic developments. It is the first production in which I have extensively used external material.
And yet it is the most personal visual work I have created to date.
