“The world suffocates in knowledge and there is no ear to listen to”

I can’t say why I spontaneously decided to buy this DVD after listening to a half overheard radio report. Apart from the fact that the purchase of DVDs is already a kind of anachronistic act nowadays, I rarely watch films myself and never actually turn on the television.

To put it briefly, this film is not a film at all, but as the title says a picture book. No a picture book (the title speaks of picture not of pictures) Godard does something in this age work (he is already nearly ninety), which can hardly be surpassed in its radicality. He cuts a film together from scenes he has shot himself, from excerpts from other films (from Europe and from the Maghreb, from the cinema and from the news), from stills from films, from texts and text fragments, photos and paintings and resulting paintings and alienated tableaux. He cuts music, language, sounds together and accompanies them with the muttered commentary of an old man who is the yes. It is hard to bear that every picture, every scene, every fragment of sentence develops its own intensity, which is threshed into the ears and eyes blow after blow.

He denies the viewer everything Hollywood promises him. Starting with the happy ending or, to put it more general, any kind of plot at all. The text doesn’t match the pictures. Scenes, still images, still and moving images alternate with twitching, trembling still images. There is no uniform look, black and white follows bright colours, implied eroticism follows violence, alienated nature scenes follow explosions and in between a few intrusive flowers. Film music alternates with murmuring and screaming. Violence is omnipresent. This is obviously also one of the messages of the film, if you will. Violence as a threat, as the violence of laws, violence as a possibility of revolt, of revolution.

An orgy of images that manages again and again to wrest the intensity of the image from the film, an intensity that is based above all on the fact that the image is self-sufficient and does not have to be integrated into a story in order to have an effect. Somehow a film that radically defends the right of the image against the film.
