Instagram

Myself only jumped on the Insta- train already running full steam in 2016. I started with great difficulties, because I didn’t really understand the concept of uploading pictures directly from my smartphone. I thought it would be much better to work on the PC etc. I did not realize that only the grandpas are sitting at their desks to operate a desktop PC with mouse and keyboard. At some point it would become clear to me that the pictures taken with the “mobile phone” can be shown here in a relaxed and uninhibited way, that you can save yourself the whole tedious “workflow” here and simply put a filter over it as you please. You can even turn the most pathetic snapshots into effective and sometimes mysterious squares with little effort and a few sliders and show them. Soon I learned to take pictures in a way that you could make a square out of them and since then the shw is running without much stress but with even more fun.

Lev Manovich and other researchers have been investigating Instagram as a phenomenon in an article available as PDF on his homepage. He looked at the high times of Instagram between 2012 and 2016. His articles are also interesting because they reflect on the question, how one can approach such a new medium to generate interesting results. He uses a combination of classical quantitative research and big-data analysis of freely available meta-information. Meanwhile the latter is also known as data-mining.

He first characterizes Instagram as a platform for casual photography:

“The Instagram platform is perfectly suited for the study of contemporary photography. We discuss the importance of differences in content and style in photographs shared in different locations around the world, and then analyze the ‘casual’ photo type. The majority of Instagram photos shared to date belong to this type. Random photos are similar in function to 20th century personal photos. They were created for friends, prefer the content and usually ignore the aesthetics.”

But of course there is also ‘aesthetic’ photography on instagram. This, says Manovich, is mainly used in a kind of competition, in a race for ‘likes’ and ‘followers’. There are probably countless subtypes, each with their own ideas of which style features are cool or hip. The photographers successful in this competition are therefore automatically trendsetters. The less creative ‘users’ are given simple means to stand out from the rest and cultivate their own subcultures with the various filters and utilities.

Last but not least, Instagram also offers creative people from other genres such as music, sculpture, dance, painting, arts and crafts, etc. an ideal showcase to present their products.

Most exciting among his approaches I find the question of the regions neglected by smartphone photography. Especially in big cities he has assigned the posted pictures to certain regions in the examined cities on the basis of the geo data and found out that in every city there are certain regions photographed to death and at the same time whole areas of land which are complete photo deserts.

But also the results on the subject of selfies are worth a few thoughts. Here Selfies from five different world cities (Bangkok, Berlin, Moscow, New York and Sao Paulo) were analysed according to different criteria. Gender, head tilt, line of sight. In general every city seems to have its own Selfie style. In Bangkok and Sao Paulo people smile the most. In Moscow the least. In Sao Paulo people tilt their head further than in the other cities.

It seems that only 4% of all analysed pictures were selfies, which is astonishing because the perceived percentage is higher. It is much more often women than men who portray themselves (one can speculate wildly about the reasons). But the men who post selfies are on average much older than the women. All in all, the oldest selfie producers are in New York (between 24.3 and 26.7 years old)

It will be exciting to watch, how Instagram develops and if, or how long it will last. Other photo platforms like flickr and co. have been around for a while, but are not self-runners as the frequent sales show. With Instagram there is the special feature that it belongs to ‘facebook’. So you pay the bill by revealing your own data.
