Dieser Artikel handelt von dem Versuch der Überwindung einer doppelten Blindheit. Zum einen habe ich lange Jahre nicht mitbekommen, dass der bekannte Bildhauer und Photograph Prof. Peter Jacobi gleich hier in der Nähe, in Pforzheim nämlich, an der Kunsthochschule gelehrt und auch hier in der Gegend gewohnt hat und wohnt.
Ich habe aber auch, und das ist mir erst bei meiner Reise nach Hermannstadt aufgegangen, jahrzehntelang nichts oder so gut wie nichts darüber mitbekommen, was in dem Land meiner Geburt und mit den anderen Mitgliedern der deutschen Minderheit in Siebenbürgen passiert ist.
Peter Jacobi hingegen, der wie ich nur eben 23 Jahre früher in Rumänien geboren wurde und der nur ein Jahr nach mir (1970) das Land verlassen hat, hat sich seit der Wende 1990 intensiv für das kulturelle Erbe der Siebenbürger Sachsen engagiert.
Jacobi, der eigentlich Bildhauer ist, hat sich seit 1979 der Photographie zugewandt und mit einer Serie von Schwarzweißbildern über Spuren und Überreste des Westwalls in diesem Genre debütiert. Er ist Mitglied der DFA.

This article is about the attempt to overcome a double blindness. For many years, I was unaware that the well-known sculptor and photographer Prof. Peter Jacobi taught at the art college here in Pforzheim and also lived and continues to live in this area.
But I also realised, only during my trip to Sibiu, that for decades I knew nothing or next to nothing about what was happening in the country of my birth and to the other members of the German minority in Transylvania.
Peter Jacobi, on the other hand, who like me was born in Romania just 23 years earlier and left the country only one year after me (in 1970), has been intensively involved in promoting the cultural heritage of the Transylvanian Saxons since the fall of communism in 1990.
Jacobi, who is actually a sculptor, turned to photography in 1979 and made his debut in this genre with a series of black-and-white images of traces and remnants of the Westwall. He is a member of the DFA.

After the fall of communism in 1990, Jacobi travelled to Transylvania several times. Since 2004, he has systematically documented the sometimes deplorable condition of the unique fortified churches in this region, which has been largely German-speaking for over 800 years.

Von den Bildern, die Jacobi von den Wehrkirchen in Rumänien gemacht hat, ist der erste Band schon lange vergriffen aber in dem 2017 erschienenen Folgeband „Siebenbürgen – Bilder einer Reise II“ mit dem sprechenden Untertitel „Stillleben nach dem Exodus“ sind nicht nur dokumentarisch, sondern auch künstlerisch äußerst ansprechende Bilder versammelt. Wer das Buch nicht kaufen will, kann auch hier fündig werden. Irgendwie wollte ich aber den ersten Band auch haben und ich hatte Glück, er wurde online zu einem Preis angeboten, der ahnen lässt, dass der Verkäufer sich nicht bewusst war, dass das Buch vergriffen und schwer zu bekommen ist. Der erste Band ist kleiner und dünner als der zweite, aber er stammt aus dem Jahr 2007, dem Jahr in dem Hermannstadt Kulturhauptstadt Europas war.
The first volume of Jacobi’s photographs of fortified churches in Romania has long been out of print, but the follow-up volume published in 2017, ‘Siebenbürgen – Bilder einer Reise II’ (Transylvania – Pictures of a Journey II), with the telling subtitle ‘Stillleben nach dem Exodus’ (Still Life after the Exodus) contains a collection of images that are not only documentary but also artistically extremely appealing. Somehow, I wanted to have the first volume as well, and I was lucky: it was offered online at a price that suggested the seller was unaware that the book was out of print and difficult to obtain. The first volume is smaller and thinner than the second, but it dates from 2007, the year Sibiu was European Capital of Culture.
Wie nun kommt das alles zusammen? Zum einen hatte ich mit Winfried Reinhardt beim Rahmen der Bilder für unsere Ausstellung in Schömberg über Jacobi geredet. Ich wusste also, dass er aus Rumänien stammt und auch photographiert, aber wie erstaunt war ich, als in Hermannstadt in unserer Unterkunft Bilder von ihm hingen (siehe Titelbild), wahrscheinlich noch „Reste“ der Ausstellung von 2007. Im Erasmus-Büchercafe entdeckte ich dann auch den oben erwähnten zweiten Band der Wehrkirchen-Bilder und im Museum der evangelischen Kirche im Teutsch-Haus hingen auch Bilder von ihm. Auch wieder Wehrkirchen, da aber eher im dokumentarischen Stil gehalten. Wir haben uns auch zwei Wehrkirchen angeschaut, die von Hermannstadt aus einfach zu erreichen sind. Michelsberg, die wohl älteste erhaltene Wehrkirche mit Ringmauer auf dem Berg über dem gleichnamigen Ort und Heltau (Bild ganz unten), mit einer sehr schönen zum Teil doppelten Ringmauer. Diese waren bei unserem Besuch beide in sehr gutem Zustand, auch dank der Gelder, die dadurch zusammengekommen sind, dass Leute wie Jacobi auf das Thema aufmerksam gemacht haben.
So how does it all fit together? Firstly, I had talked to Winfried Reinhardt about Jacobi while framing the pictures for our exhibition in Schömberg. So I knew that he came from Romania and was also a photographer, but how surprised I was when I saw pictures of him hanging in our accommodation in Sibiu (see cover photo), probably ‘leftovers’ from the 2007 exhibition. In the Erasmus Book Café, I discovered the second volume of the fortified church pictures mentioned above, and there were also pictures by him hanging in the Museum of the Protestant Church in the Teutsch House. Again, they were fortified churches, but in a more documentary style. We also visited two fortified churches that are easy to reach from Sibiu. Michelsberg, probably the oldest preserved fortified church with a ring wall on the mountain above the village of the same name, and Heltau (picture at the bottom), with a very beautiful, partly double ring wall. Both were in very good condition when we visited, thanks in part to the funds raised by people like Jacobi who drew attention to the issue.

So stieß ich im DFA-Podcast #8 auf ein Interview mit Jacobi, bei dem es um seine umfangreiche Sammlung an meist photographischen Bildern aus Siebenbürgen und Rumänien ging.
Es ist wohl eine Sammlung, die auch eine nicht zu verachtende historische Bedeutung hat. Es geht schließlich um Bilder, die bis in die kurze Zeit des rumänischen Königreiches an der Schwelle zu 20ten Jahrhundert zurückreichen.
In dem Interview geht es auch noch darum, was mit der Sammlung passieren soll. Inzwischen gibt es eine Stiftung, ich weiß aber nicht, ob diese auch die Sammlung verwaltet. Nur zu gerne würde ich da mal einen Blick reinwerfen. Mit meinem Artikel über Photographen in Hermannstadt habe ich das Thema Photographie in Siebenbürgen im 19ten und 20ten Jahrhundert ja nur angerissen.
Ebenfalls von meinen PFotoherbst-Mitstreitern Winfried Reinhardt und Jens Alemann habe ich erfahren, dass es eine Ausstellung zu Jacobis neunzigstem Geburtstag geben soll. Diese wurde an seinem Geburtstag dem 11.11. 25, mit einer vom Kulturamt organisierten Feier eröffnet, zu der ich ursprünglich nicht eingeladen war. Aber eine freundliche Nachfrage hat mir eine nachträgliche Einladung beschert.
As is often the case when I am researching a topic or photographer, the information comes together effortlessly (though not always completely). In DFA podcast #8, I came across an interview with Jacobi about his extensive collection of mostly photographic images from Transylvania and Romania.
It is a collection that also has considerable historical significance. After all, these are images that date back to the brief period of the Romanian Kingdom at the dawn of the 20th century.
The interview also discusses what should happen to the collection. There is now a foundation, but I don’t know if it also manages the collection. I would love to take a look at it. I also learned from my PFotoherbst colleagues Winfried Reinhardt and Jens Alemann that there is to be an exhibition on the occasion of Jacobi’s ninetieth birthday. This was opened on his birthday, 11 November 2025, with a celebration organised by the cultural office, to which I was not originally invited. However, a friendly enquiry resulted in me receiving a belated invitation.

It is more than fitting that the city of Pforzheim is honouring one of its most famous artists, who taught in Pforzheim for decades, with an exhibition. It can be viewed in the new cultural space (https://www.kulturraum-pforzheim.de/index.html) in the Schlossberghöfe until 26 January. On display are several smaller columns and other sculptures, three of the fortified church paintings, albeit in an impressive size, three paintings of the Holocaust memorial in Bucharest designed by Jacobi, and a few other paintings from various periods of his artistic exploration of photography.
