Die Vervielfältigung der Gliedmaßen / The multiplication of the limbs

Why do my eyes linger on some images and others leave me cold. It is a picture about four by six centimeters in the KUNSTZEITUNG, which is supposed to illustrate a short note about a collective exhibition in Ulm. But it irritates me so much that I take it upon myself to look up, who the artist is and what else she does. Now you have to know that very often I make up my mind to ‘google’ something and then just as often I forget it again, and it disappears from my consciousness. Not so this time.

Sometimes it takes quite a while until we realize why I react to certain photos and not to others. In the case of Mari Katayama, after the initial disturbance led me to engage with the photographs, it slowly became clear that the interest might come, at least superficially, from my professional involvement with physically disabled people. If one is used to physical deviations being carefully retouched out of reality by a whole branch of crafts (orthopedic technicians, orthopedic mechanics, bandagers, etc.), someone like Mari Katayama can actually only disturb. Orthoses, prostheses and other aids are intended to compensate for a loss of function, but also to correct and hide otherness.

Mari Katayama goes the opposite way. Of course, she also uses aids in everyday life, but in her photography she shows herself as she is. Without feet and with a two-finger hand on the left. She shows herself and her prostheses, but here as well she goes a very individual way. In general, it is tried to fake the impression of “authenticity” with prostheses, e.g. by using flesh-coloured silicone. Marie started to paint her prostheses, to decorate them, to duplicate them, to make them as conspicuous as possible. In addition, she has begun to create limbs from fabrics, of lace and jewellery, which either mirror her own figure or represent the normal imagination and sometimes drift into the fantastic. Textiles  play a major role in her art and in the stagings she arranges for the photographs.

The most impressive pictures I still find are those, where she drapes herself in the middle of a collection of limbs and looks like a stranded starfish or polyp in the picture on the beach, for example. Mari Katayama playfully stages her self-image, but what at first looks like a preoccupation with herself gradually turns into a micropolitical statement: “Accept how you look and don’t let them  sell you the norm as the ideal. It is ultimately hollow, and you can only really realize yourself in the confrontation with yourself”. “Know thyself” has a very basic, physical undertone here, but is as emancipatory as ever.

LG Hania
