Archivieren Teil 2
Jede Kommune ab einer gewissen Größe unterhält ein Archiv. In meinem Wohnort gibt es das der Stadt und das des Enzkreises. Neben den Beständen an Büchern, Briefen, Urkunden, Protokollen und Verträgen gibt es dort auch Fotoarchive. Für mich ist das städtische Fotoarchiv Inspirationsquelle, Ansprech- und Kooperationspartner in Sachen dokumentarischer Fotografie.
Stadtgeschichte
Die Stadt, in der ich wohne, wurde am 23. Februar 1945 bombardiert. 80 Prozent der Innenstadt, fiel den Bomben und dem anschließenden Feuersturm zum Opfer. Nach Kriegsende wurde die Zerstörung als Chance gesehen und die Stadtväter (und -Mütter) entschlossen sich dazu, eine „moderne, autofreundliche Stadt“ zu bauen. Das gelang. Fast 80 Jahre später prägt die Nachkriegsmoderne in vielen Bereichen noch immer das Gesicht der Innenstadt.
Kontakt zum Stadtarchiv
Mit meinen Aufnahmen der Pforzheimer Nachkriegsmoderne erstellte ich eine Multimedia Show. Für den Anfang der Show suchte ich historische Aufnahmen aus der Zeit vor der Zerstörung. Dafür besuchte ich das Bildarchiv des Stadtarchivs. Beim Stöbern in den alten Schwarz-Weiß-Aufnahmen war ich von der fotografischen Qualität beeindruckt. Die Fotografen der 50er- bis 70er-Jahre verstanden ihr Handwerk. Ich kam auch mit der Bildarchivarin ins Gespräch.Von ihr erfuhr ich einiges über die Systematik des Bildarchivs und die Quellen. Auf meine Frage, wer heute die Veränderungen im urbanen Raum für das Stadtarchiv dokumentiere, seufzte sie hörbar. Es ist offenbar ein Problem, an aktuelle Bilder zu bekommen. Hin und wieder vergibt das Stadtarchiv Aufträge an Fotografen, die zum Beispiel die städtischen Schulen oder die Sportplätze dokumentieren. Ansonsten bekommt das Archiv Aufnahmen aus der Lokalpresse. Frau A. zeigte mir halb-werbliche Aufnahmen von Geschäftseröffnungen und ähnlichen Ereignissen. Ich war erschüttert. In weiteren Gesprächen mit dem Stadtarchiv wurde deutlich, dass durchaus Interesse besteht, auf das Potenzial engagierter Amateure zurückzugreifen. Willkommen sind dokumentarische Bildarchive von guter fotografischer Qualität, die thematisch sortiert und archivfähig verschlagwortet, betitelt und beschriftet sind. Eine Festplatte mit Zehntausenden unsortierter Aufnahmen quer durch alle Genres wird wohl eher nicht angenommen.
Arbeitskreis
So kam ich auf den Gedanken, das Potenzial der Amateurfotografie in den Dienst des Stadtarchivs zu stellen. Daraus entstand der „Arbeitskreis Dokumentarische Fotografie Nordschwarzwald“ (siehe Artikel). Auch beim Fotocamp 2023 habe ich die Idee vorgestellt. Momentan überlege ich, den Arbeitskreis über die Presse bekannter zu machen, um mehr als die „üblichen Verdächtigen“ dafür zu interessieren.
Konsequenzen
Ich begann meine Aufnahmen aus Pforzheim nach dem System des städtischen Bildarchivs zu archivieren und zu beschriften. Ich nahm dabei immer wieder Rücksprache mit der Leiterin, die sich sehr hilfreich und kooperativ zeigte. Der Prozess zog sich mit Unterbrechungen über mehr als ein Jahr hin. Inzwischen sind meine älteren Aufnahmen so weit vorbereitet, dass sie mit geringem Aufwand in das digitale Bildarchiv der Stadt übernommen werden können. Auch meine neueren Aufnahmen zum Thema werden entsprechend aufbereitet. Fernziel ist die Übergabe des kompletten Konvoluts meiner dokumentarischen Fotografie an das hiesige Bildarchiv, ein kleinerer Teil als Vorlass, das meiste als Nachlass. Mit der Übergabe an das städtische Bildarchiv wird meine dokumentarische Bildersammlung Teil der Stadtgeschichte.

On the subject of archiving Part 2
Every municipality over a certain size maintains an archive. Where I live, there is one for the town and one for the district Enzkreis. In addition to books, letters, documents, minutes and contracts, they contain also photo archives. For me, the local municipal photo archive is a source of inspiration, a contact and a cooperation partner in matters of documentary photography.
City history
The city where I live was bombed on 23 February 1945. 80 percent of the city centre fell victim to the bombs and the subsequent firestorm. After the war ended, the destruction was seen as an opportunity and the city fathers (and mothers) decided to build a “modern, car-friendly city”. They succeeded. Almost 80 years later, post-war modernism still characterises the face of the city centre in many areas.
Contacting the city archive
I created a multimedia show with my photographs of Pforzheim’s post-war modernism. For the beginning of the show I was looking for historical photographs from the time before the destruction. For this I visited the picture archive of the local city archive. While browsing through the old black-and-white photos, I was impressed by the photographic quality. The photographers of the 50s to 70s knew their craft. I also got to talk to the picture archivist, from whom I learned a lot about the systematics of the picture archive and the sources. When I asked her who was documenting the changes in urban space for the city archive today, she sighed audibly. Apparently it is a problem to get hold of current pictures. Every now and then, the city archive commissions photographers to document the city schools or sports fields, for example. Otherwise the archive gets pictures from the local press. Ms A. showed me semi-publicity shots of shop openings and similar events. I was shocked. In further discussions with the city archives it became clear that there is definitely interest in drawing on the potential of committed amateurs. Documentary picture archives of good photographic quality that are thematically sorted and archivally keyworded, titled and labelled are welcome. A hard drive with tens of thousands of unsorted photographs across all genres is unlikely to be accepted.
Working group
This gave me the idea of putting the potential of amateur photography at the service of the city archive. This developed into the “Arbeitskreis Dokumentarische Fotografie Nordschwarzwald” (see article). I also presented the idea at Fotocamp 2023. At the moment, I am thinking about making the working group better known through the press in order to interest more than the “usual suspects”.
Consequences
I started to archive and label my photos from Pforzheim according to the system of the municipal photo archive. I repeatedly consulted the director, who was very helpful and cooperative. The process took more than a year, with interruptions. In the meantime, my older photographs have been prepared to such an extent that they can be transferred to the city’s digital image archive with little effort. My more recent photographs on the subject are also being prepared accordingly. The long-term goal is to hand over the complete collection of my documentary photography to the local picture archive, a small part as a preliminary estate, most of it as an estate. With the transfer to the municipal picture archive, my documentary picture collection will become part of the city’s history.

Hallo Rolf, ja, so ist es auch gedacht, als Anleitung. Das Archivieren ist nichts Glamouröses, ein wenig banal vielleicht auch. Ich denke dabei an die Tontäfelchen aus Mosopotamien…

Vielen Dank für deinen erhellenden Bericht. Zusammen mit dem ersten Teil ist es ja schon fast so eine Art Anleitung, wie man, wenn man denn am Dokumentarischen interessiert ist, seine Bilder organisieren muss, damit sie auch für die Nachwelt erhalten bleiben. Dazu gehört natürlich auch die ehrliche Frage an sich selbst, was des Erhaltes würdig ist und was nicht. Insgesamt viel Arbeit. So tut es nicht Wunder, dass wir bisher noch nicht so viele Mitstreiter gefunden haben. Ich merke es ja an mir selbst. Meine anderen Projekte lassen einfach nicht die Zeit, diese aufwändige Sortierarbeit zu leisten. Kann ja aber noch kommen 🙂
