Ein Hamburger Held/ A Hamburg Hero

Walter Schels im Haus der Fotografie/Hamburg – eine Liste

Walter Schels in the `House of Photography´ / Hamburg – a list

Originally, I wanted to report on my visit to his exhibition at the Haus der Fotografie /Deichtorhallen. But the main thrust of this retrospective is the variety of topics that Schels deals with, the variety of concepts he has implemented. That’s why I made a list. And that’s just a selection:

Hands of dead people

Newborn children

Premature children

Smile (double triptych with down-man, girl and Dalay Lama each smiling and grim)

Then you stand in front of it for a while and ask yourself, what of importance can I still photograph, that was not done before? The comforting answer is right next door “Good prospects” – insights into the work of young photographers. They still got a lot of new ideas. Not as clear and basal as Scheels but quite exciting, if you can get involved.
