Mache mir die Welt / Constructing my world

Sometimes you need a little time to appreciate something you saw some time ago. This is how I feel about Frank Kunert . Already in 2018 I visited his exhibition in Schloss Neuenbürg together with Andi. It was almost a bit like a curiosity or better a curiosity cabinet. To see his models, plus the pictures. Astonishment, smiles, helplessness and manyieiecht an inkling that such a project would not quite fit in with what you know and expect from photography. Also a thought about what could motivate someone to take such a difficult path, when today you can manipulate everything with Photoshop as you like. Why create a model in meticulous detail work, paint it, equip it with miniature details and illuminate it to create a photo of it?

From the effect point of view, it is worth the effort, because you are often surprised by these miniature worlds only at second glance, so that you start to think. And that is much more than the effect of common photography. It may sound a bit pompous, but the effect reminds me of what is going on inside me when I look at surrealistic works of art, only that this is new. The small worlds that Kunert builds obey the laws of pataphysics, if at all. And yet they refer very specifically to social ‘realities’, peculiarities of our world, which could be described in many words, but which become much clearer when they appear in a picture as soon as you take a closer look at it.

Kunert has reappeared in my attention through exhibition announcements and his nomination for the Merck Prize  as part of the ‘Darmstadt Days of Photography’. But if you visit his homepage you can see that he has had a lot of exhibitions in the meantime and probably made some of his contemporaries happy. You can also find new works, such as the `Stammtisch´, which I was particularly enthusiastic about. Apart from ‘social distancing’ I can spontaneously think of a whole range of other possible interpretations. And I think this is also one of the strengths of his art. That the objects and pictures remain open to interpretation and open a space for reflection.

I would have liked to say that what Kunert does is unique. That does not mean, however, that there are no other artists, such as Thomas Demand , who pursue a similar strategy, which could perhaps be described as the ‘reverse engineering’ of photography. If the world does not provide me with what I want to show then I just build the world exactly how I Iike it to be.
