Die wilden Achtziger / The wild Eighties

I won’t tell you how I came to visit a photo exhibition in Lüneburg (too private). By chance, I heard about this retrospective and immediately decided to visit it. The exhibition venue itself is also worth mentioning. It is the Kulturbäckerei, a brick building that includes various studios and this exhibition space on two floors.

The photographer shown there is Volker Hinz, who died in 2019. Born in the north of Germany, his life was filled with photography. From 1974 to 78 he worked for Stern  and then as a freelance photo journalist in New York City. In 1986 he returned to Hamburg. After his death, his widow gave his photo archive to the Bayrische Staats-Bibliothek (BSB), where it is archived and digitised. The BSB had already taken over the 15 million pictures of the “Stern” photo archive in 2019 and is in the process of concluding contracts with the individual authors, which also include that the pictures can be shown in exhibitions (source: PHOTONEWS March22). It will be exciting to see what will be shown on the BSB’s homepage, which is currently being rebuilt.

On show in Lüneburg, apart from a series of USA pictures, are above all those of his pictures that could be described as celebrity photography. Andy Warhol with Basquiat. Madonna and Lady Gaga, but also William S. Burroughs with his guns as well as Nan Goldin and Susan Sontag. Many beautiful pictures of Mohammed Ali (Cassius Clay) and quite a few German politicians and sportsmen. Beckenbauer and Müller in a marriage bed, or the cover picture of the exhibition with Beckenbauer and Pelé in the team shower. Arne Schwarzenegger proudly shows off his muscles and poses in front of a Terminator background. In the German section, you can admire Günter Grass, Willy Brandt and even Helmut Schmidt and Helmut Kohl together in one picture. Angie Merkel, of course, cannot be missing when it comes to German political celebrities.

The part of the exhibition in which Hinz shows colour photographs from the happening nightclub AREA is really impressive. As colourful and shrill as only the 80s can be. The photos document a unique and ultimately irretrievable experiment that school friends from California started in New York City in 1983. In an old warehouse, a kind of living theatre was performed under the cover of a nightclub. Not only would the décor be adapted to suit individual themes each time, but all the visitors contributed something to these “happenings” with their respective talents. The idea of performance had finally arrived in everyday life. Of course, this attracted above all creative and showy contemporaries and the result, if you believe the photos by Volker Hinz, was a colourful hustle and bustle that was unparalleled, not only in the 80s.

A lot has already been said (including nonsense) about the 80s, and in the end it can only be verified by personal experiences, which, as we know, can be very different. For me, the 80s were the most intense time of my life, even though I was already approaching 30. The music continues to resonate in me, the art events I have to acquire retrospectively, because I wasn’t that interested in art back then. In the end, of course, I wasn’t out in clubs either. That makes such a retrospective insight all the more exciting for me. In addition to individual pictures from this club, the exhibition also includes a video that shows many more of these pictures against the background of the music of the time and lets you travel back to that time even more and more sensually.
