Erbe / Heritage

I don’t know exactly why I bought the book ‘Heritage’ by Martin Rosswog. Probably because the subject of the disappearing or already disappeared touches me. The book is also about houses in Transylvania/Romania, houses that were built and inhabited by Transylvanian Saxons but abandoned in the post-Ceausescu era and are now inhabited by Romanians or Roma. What actually constitutes the cultural character of these houses has already disappeared and now lives in Germany in rented flats or terraced houses. But the traces are still there.

Just like the historical buildings in my native city of Hermannstadt (Sibiu ). After years of decay, everything has been beautifully renovated and presented as European Capital of Culture in 2007 – but the people who supported this culture for 800 years are gone. I don’t want to get sentimental. I also left the country more than 50 years ago – but in this context the question of origin and home inevitably arises, which Saša Stanišić  so aptly fragments in his book Herkunft (Origin) and does not really know how to answer.

Uprooted is not the right word either, because I was carefully transplanted early on and put down my roots here – but the question remains. The paradox of life par excellence, that a return to origin is only possible in religion, is also reflected here on a geographical level.

If the question cannot be answered through a return, then perhaps through a confrontation with the parents, who are also the origin and carry the origin within themselves. I have just now taken on a difficult legacy at Easter, I have taken my father’s original slides (3-4 moving boxes full) and with them a whole part of my parents’ biography. After they had been locked up in communism in their youth, so to speak, and then didn’t get very far in capitalism because of the family and all the money they had to earn, they took advantage of their early retirement years to travel the world from Morocco to the North Cape in a camper van. Since they are no longer so good on foot and Corona keeps them locked up in their flat, they have started to retrace and remember their journeys with the help of scanned slides. Certainly not a bad strategy to cope with the predicament.

For the time being, I just want to manage these boxes, I didn’t have the heart to hand them over to the container. Let’s see if I still get around to dealing with them. For now, I have enough to do with my own output. If you want to see what’s coming out, have a look at Flickr  or Instagram.
