Nichts was man sich freiwillig anschauen würde. Eindrucksvolle Dokumentation der Schattenseite des amerikanischen Traums.

I don’t know how I came up with the idea of going to Berlin to visit the ˋBerlin Photo Week’. The date just fitted and it sounded good somehow. When I found a photowalk on the theme of ˋWorkers’ Palaces and Eastgerman Modernism’ among all the modell shootings and poolside sessions, I booked without further ado. The slick design of the website and app could have put me off, but I wanted to go. The fact that the location is one of the most colourful corners of Berlin fits the theme, but the website didn’t say that this corner is also quite filthy, especially when it’s raining all the time, and that it smells like a Monday morning in a self-governed youth centre from 40 years ago.

In the end, let’s admit it, it was a fair with stands of almost all the well-known manufacturers, dealers and other suppliers, adorned with a number of exhibitions on site and flanked by a few more exhibitions in the usual photo galleries and museums of Berlin.

The exhibition on the RAW grounds that particularly impressed me, perhaps because of my taste in music were the images from the Montreaux Jazz Festival 2013 presented by Michael Agel at CASSIOPEIA, just the right dark club atmosphere with the almost life-size well-lit portraits of the musicians. That was an experience. Another experience of a special kind, however, were Bruce Gilden’s heads, which were also as tall as a man. Really frightening faces, every pimple, every hair and every crooked tooth photographed hard but still somehow respectful. Nothing you would watch voluntarily. Impressive documentation of the dark side of the American dream.

The workshop was worth the money, the short journey through the boulevard of former East Berlin with its classicist and modernist show-off buildings offers a lot for photographers like me who are not averse to architectural photography and the depiction of man-made landscapes. The group was relatively small in contrast to the fully booked shootings. Even the weather cooperated and stopped the continuous rain for three hours. After the extensive walk, there was still plenty of opportunity to visit the exhibitions and listen to a few of the lectures, which unfortunately also had a bit of that flair of lectures in exhibition halls, with constant ‘in and out’ of people with just 25 minutes and with the claim to entertain the audience. In addition, two of the three photographers, I was able to hear were ˋbrand ambassadors’, so ultimately a kind of sponsored influencer, who of course also have to place their brands. Not that the lectures weren’t exciting and inspiring, but like the whole Photo Week, they had a “salesy” feel to them.
