Jäger und/oder Sammler / Hunter and/or collector

People often speak of “hunters and gatherers” without much differentiation. At first glance, there is some truth in this. In terms of human history, this refers to a period before agriculture (see Yuval N. Harari “A Brief History of Mankind” ), in which nomadic people subsisted on hunting and gathering fruits, berries and roots. Collecting is not used in the sense we use it today, for example, in the term ‘art collector’. Whoever collects today accumulates certain things or representations of things. And of course, he is also a hunter, but rather in the sense that he/she must first bring the coveted pieces into his/her possession.

From my own experience I think that it also makes a difference whether for the person concerned the ‘fun in the matter’ comes more from hunting or more from collecting.

Hunting is not really my thing, but as a teenager I lived in a real collecting frenzy and collected everything I could get my hands on, from stamps and coins to beer mats, cigarette packets, tobacco pouches, cigarette paper packets and crown caps. You can already guess roughly what I was mainly occupied with at that time. Since then, I have always shifted the objects of my collecting passion to other things. Book collections have fallen victim to the many moves, wooden objects as well.

Not long ago, I started fishing old cameras out of the net. But I soon stopped myself because I could no longer store them adequately and threw them back into the same bay from which I fetched them. Only a small display case with pieces that mean something to me personally has survived (see above). As for the books, the focus of the collection has shifted towards photography books and books about photography. As you can see, I’m not particularly consistent, but I’m still collecting.

I admire all the more those collectors who consistently present their treasures and booty in their stream over the years. I have picked out a few flickr friends and Harald has recommended a few more from his contacts. It is unbelievable what motifs are collected. Here is a selection:

An approx. 4×6 paper picture of poor quality is the only document that illustrates my early passion for collecting. In my memory, the picture was more colourful.
