Auge in Auge mit Beuys im Museum / Eye to eye with Beuys in the museum

Even though I don’t see myself as an artist, that in no way prevents me from being fascinated by people who wash over the arid land like a wave of creativity. Such a person is Joseph Beuys – I hesitate to write ‘been’ because he obviously continues to have an effect. This year he would have turned 100 and that makes it hard to pass him by. I only learned something substantial about him in 2017 when I was able to experience Andreas Veiel’s film in Karlsruhe at the Schauburg. Beuys made another impressive appearance in the Gerhard Richter film, which I was able to watch in the Mediathek only a few months ago. This year I have already watched various interviews and other material about him, but I only got a personal connection through the film “Zeig deine Wunde” by Rüdiger Sünner. Maybe that’s because the film also starts searching for traces from a position of being personally affected by Beuys’ works.

Aber was bleibt wirklich?

Like Beuys, I also drifted around in the anthroposophical world for years, found much to inspire me, but then shrank back from the institutions and turned my back on the teachings without losing the core: The feeling that there must be something else than materialism and consumption. And the realisation that you have to nurture it, in your dealings with nature, in the choice of spiritual food you feed yourself and produce, and in your social connections. Beuys, and this is not surprising as an artist, was concerned throughout his life with how one can become creative from within oneself, from one’s dreams, visions and also from one’s traumas and defeats.

What Beuys then seemed to be cranky seems almost prophetic again today. The ecological orientation that seems inevitable today, the vision that everyone can be creative, which has become almost self-evident through the new media, and the liberation of art from the narrow boundaries of genres, which is now part of everyday culture in interdisciplinary installations and art events, are only the most striking examples.

So what does this have to do with photography? Well, Beuys was possibly one of the most photographed faces of his time. He was present in newspapers and magazines, there are heaps of videos of his actions, interviews and discussions. But what really remains?

In recent years, there have been exhibitions of pictures taken by his wife Eva Beuys  from time to time. This gives us an idea that the man who appears publicly in almost all other pictorial documents also had a private life. Lothar Wolleh also accompanied him for a long time. And there are pictures of him that have imprinted themselves on people’s memories, not least because Andreas Veiel was allowed to make ample use of them for his documentary film. But also because he had the idea of photographing Beuys setting up his works of art. This gives an impression of the process of presenting his art and not only of the result, which has been shown often enough. But it is also worth taking a look at Wolleh’s vita  and what other pictures he made. You can do this on the homepage dedicated to him.

There is a Beuys exhibition in every other city at the moment. That’s not the only reason I’m staying local. When the museums open again, I’ll take a look at the exhibition in Stuttgart, which shows Beuys as a curator of space, as a designer of spaces.
